In March 2022, Maria Ivanova traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, as a member of the Rwanda delegation to the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). She actively engaged in the negotiations on a resolution to end plastic pollution and was the only academic official to serve on the UNEA delegation. As a new director of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University, Ivanova wants "Northeastern to be seen as a place where people go for enhanced public policy discussions, particularly discussions concerning scientific and environmental issues."
